Treatment of overweight/obesity

Since the development of overweight and obesity is a complex process that is influenced by various factors, the treatment of obesity therefore consists of several elements.

In order to be able to propose the best treatment tailored to your needs, an evaluation is initially proposed by a multidisciplinary team and a treatment plan is drawn up in collaboration with the patient. In addition to the patient's personal view, the current overall health status and certain medical conditions that may already be present are also taken into account.

The basis of every treatment for obesity is a healthy lifestyle with attention to the following principles, among others:

- Healthy food with a balanced and structured diet

- More physical activity

- Sufficient sleep

- Avoiding stress

Although these lifestyle changes are of great importance, they do sometimes not result in sufficient weight loss. Especially at higher BMI's, the results of these measures alone can sometimes be discouraging.

For this specific subset of patients, multiple studies have shown that surgery can provide an effective and sustainable treatment for the obesity itself and the medical conditions that may be associated. For example, it has been demonstrated that after obesity surgery (also known as bariatric surgery) associated type 2 diabetes can improve in up to 85% of patients. In some cases and after consulting the treating general practitioner or endocrinologist, the diabetes medication can be reduced or even stopped.

An overview of the different treatment options, the requirements for surgery, as well as the different types of surgery can be found here.
