Importance of physical activity

Even after surgical treatment of obesity, physical activity remains of great importance in the further postoperative process. Physical activity at this stage is not so much aimed at further weight loss but rather at maintaining the amount of muscle mass. Sufficient protein intake in this context is also important, which will also be discussed with you by the dietitian. Preserving and regaining muscle mass after surgery results in the following short- and long-term benefits:

- Less fatigue

- Overall fitter condition

- Better exercise tolerance

- Less risk of late dumping (hypoglycemia)

How?

Although classic physical activities such as walking, jogging or cycling are of course encouraged, they contribute to a limited extent to muscle mass gain. Often, obesity has also caused joint or back complaints, which can make jogging problematic. Therefore, patients are encouraged to mainly perform muscle strengthening exercises that increase muscle mass. This can be done in various ways:

- On your own initiative via fitness or personal coach. Guidance for this is strongly recommended to avoid injuries.

- With the help of physiotherapist

- Coordinated under medical supervision from the physical medicine department.
