Since its introduction in 1994, the laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) has become the gold standard procedure in the surgical treatment of morbid obesity. Various variants of the technique have been developed over the past 3 decades. However, one of the most innovative developments in recent years has been the gradual implementation of robotic surgery for this type of surgery. Advantages of the robotic technique include better 3D visualization, greater surgical dexterity and less trauma to the abdominal wall resulting in less postoperative pain and a shorter hospital stay.
The obesity clinic of AZ Groeninge is one of the pioneers in Belgium in the implementation of this robotic technique in obesity surgery, with experience in more than 350 procedures, where our hospital acts as a reference center for other surgeons who want to adapt this technique.
Our surgical technique was published last week in the international scientific journal 'Surgery Open Digestive Advance': https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S266700892400020X
